Medtronic MiniMed 780G insulin pump recalled for incorrect insulin delivery based on pump position

OTHERNationwide distribution

Check your MiniMed 780G pump position during use

Medtronic MiniMed insulin pumps (including the 780G model and older Paradigm and 600 series) may deliver too much or too little insulin when the pump is held higher or lower than the infusion site on your body. This happens because gravity affects how insulin flows through the tubing. Too much insulin can cause dangerously low blood sugar; too little can cause dangerously high blood sugar.

  • Keep your pump at approximately the same height as your infusion site during daily wear (typically at waist or chest level when seated or standing normally)
  • Monitor your blood sugar readings more frequently than usual
  • Contact Medtronic MiniMed or your healthcare provider for updated instructions or a replacement pump if needed
  • Do not stop using your pump without talking to your doctor first
Hazard

All Medtronic MiniMed infusion pumps (Paradigm series, 600 series, and BLE 700 series) were found to be affected by unintended over- and under-delivery of insulin when the pump is elevated or lowered relative to the infusion site, respectively, because of changes in gravitational force impacting hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressures. Insulin over-delivery, which can occur when the pump is elevated relative to the infusion site, can result in severe hypoglycemia, altered mental status, seizure, coma, or death. An under-delivery of insulin, which can occur at lowered pump height conditions relative to the infusion site, can result in severe hyperglycemia, dehydration, diabetic ketoacidosis, or death.
