Medtronic MiniMed insulin pumps recalled for gravity-related over- and under-delivery
Check your MiniMed insulin pump positioning
Medtronic MiniMed insulin pumps (Paradigm, 600, and 700 series) can deliver too much or too little insulin when the pump height changes relative to the infusion site. When elevated, excess insulin may cause dangerously low blood sugar. When lowered, insufficient insulin may cause dangerously high blood sugar. This affects about 116,000 pumps worldwide.
- Keep your pump at the same height as your infusion site—do not wear it significantly above or below where the catheter enters your skin
- Contact Medtronic immediately for guidance on safe pump positioning and potential replacement options
- Monitor your blood sugar more frequently until you receive instructions from your pump manufacturer
- Discuss this recall with your doctor or diabetes care team
All Medtronic MiniMed infusion pumps (Paradigm series, 600 series, and BLE 700 series) were found to be affected by unintended over- and under-delivery of insulin when the pump is elevated or lowered relative to the infusion site, respectively, because of changes in gravitational force impacting hydrostatic and hydrodynamic pressures. Insulin over-delivery, which can occur when the pump is elevated relative to the infusion site, can result in severe hypoglycemia, altered mental status, seizure, coma, or death. An under-delivery of insulin, which can occur at lowered pump height conditions relative to the infusion site, can result in severe hyperglycemia, dehydration, diabetic ketoacidosis, or death.
