Petzl Nomic and Ergonomic ice climbing axes recalled for shaft fracture hazard
What this means
The aluminum shaft on Petzl Nomic and Ergonomic ice climbing axes can break at the handle during use, creating a fall hazard. This affects axes sold between December 2017 and March 2022. Petzl has received 26 reports of shaft breaks but no injuries so far.
- Stop using the recalled ice axes right away.
- Check your axes: Nomic axes are black, Ergonomic axes are orange. Find the serial number on a label on the upper shaft.
- Register at https://www.petzl.com/US/en/Sport/Contact?request=product-recall to request a free repair kit and shipping label.
- Return the shaft to Petzl. They will send you a new shaft, hardware, and assembly instructions at no cost.

Petzl America will send a repair kit with a new shaft, hardware for the grip rest and assembly instructions.
