Medline Convenience Kits recalled for sterile packaging breach and contamination risk
What this means
Several Medline medical convenience kits—including IV start kits, blood culture kits, and pediatric emergency trays—contain sterile applicators with wrinkles in the packaging that may compromise the sterile barrier. If the packaging is damaged, the contents could be exposed to microbial contamination, which could cause infection ranging from minor to serious.
- Check your facility's inventory for affected kit catalog numbers (DYNDV2520, DYNDH1983A, ACC010157C through ACC010162C, and others listed in the recall notice).
- Do not use kits with the affected lot numbers listed in the recall.
- Contact Medline at 1-800-MEDLINE or check the FDA website for the complete list of affected lot numbers and catalog numbers.
- Return affected kits to your supplier or Medline for replacement or credit.
The agency's original wording
The kits contain BD ChloraPrep Clear - 1 mL and FREPP Clear 1.5 mL Applicators which have a potential breach of sterility in the packaging, due to wrinkles in the paper lidding which may extend to the seal area. If the sterile barrier is compromised, patients and users may be exposed to microbial contamination. Potential health consequences may include no injury, localized infection, or, less commonly, more serious infection requiring medical treatment, antimicrobial therapy, procedural intervention, or hospitalization. In rare cases, particularly in critically ill or immunocompromised patients, severe infection could become life-threatening.
